Synopsis:
Vampire hunter Elena Deveraux wakes from a year-long coma to find herself changed—an angel with wings the colors of midnight and dawn—but her fragile body needs time to heal before she can take flight. Her lover, the stunningly dangerous archangel, Raphael, is used to being in control—especially when it comes to the woman he considers his own. But Elena has never done well with authority.

They’ve barely begun to understand each other when Raphael receives an invitation to a ball from the archangel, Lijuan. To refuse would be a sign of fatal weakness, so Raphael must ready Elena for the flight to Beijing—and to the nightmare that awaits them there. Ancient and without conscience, Lijuan holds a power that lies with the dead. And she has organized the most perfect and most vicious of welcomes for Elena.

Review:
I wanted to like this book and after reading the first book I thought I love this one. But I just couldn’t. Now keep in mind, my review is not the norm. So if you are considering reading this book, please take a look at other reviews because most people do like this book.

I don’t think I’m giving anything away when I say Elaine turns into an angel. I thought this was actually pretty cool. But the way Elaine downplays how she became this way, well that was disappointing and somewhat confusing. I felt like the author was pushing Elaine and Raphael’s relationship yet at the same time not really following through. Elaine and Raphael’s relationship is just strange to me. First off, there isn’t much chemistry between the two. I would compare their relationship to a combination of something between instant love and only sexual. It didn’t really fit well. On one hand they will die for each other but on the other, there is no trust and they don’t know each other. And secondly, half the time Elaine didn’t believe in their relationship and the other half she was all tingly and wet… I just don’t get it.

The other thing that really got to me in this book is the writing.  I felt like there was a lot of repetition, especially with some of the exact phrasing used in book one. Where is the creativity in that? And the cursed loop of flashbacks. I mean come on!! The author hints at what happened but doesn’t indulge. It would be one thing if these hinted flashbacks happened every now and then. But it felt like they happened all the time and there was no resolution. It was annoying, repetitive, and frustrating.

Half way through I was bored reading the book. Maybe I will try this book again but until then, this book goes into the DNF Graveyard…
