I Am NOT Too Old for Fairy Tales!

Confession time: I’m a grown-ass 43-year-old woman who loves fairy tales. I own copies of all the Disney classics. I can sing the entire soundtrack of The Little Mermaid – in character! – while driving carpool. I even wrote a novel that’s essentially a modern-day Beauty and the Beast with a little Bridget Jones thrown in.

And I’m not alone in my fairytale fascination. These stories are tremendously popular – from Disney’s epic movies and theme parks to Shrek to TV’s Once Upon a Time. A couple of years ago, I couldn’t go two hours without hearing a song from Frozen (usually from the back seat of my car, sung to the beat of my pounding headache.)

So why do these stories still resonate so strongly? For me, there are three main reasons.

1. Clarity.Fairy tales are pretty straightforward about who the good guys and the bad guys are – something we don’t see very often nowadays in fiction or in real life. It’s kind of refreshing.

2. Justice.The villain in a fairy tale (almost) always gets what’s coming to them. It’s viscerally satisfying, okay?

3. A happy ending!It’s the ultimate wish fulfillment when the hero or heroine prevails against the odds and gets their happily-ever-after. Totally swoon-worthy, in my opinion, and I can always use a good swoon.

So that’s my theory, as a strong, opinionated, (relatively) well-adjusted woman who refuses to act her age. (Anyone up for an Aladdin sing-along?)
